The editorial
Source: The Economic Times · 20 Jan 2020The government should own up responsibility for the revenue share mess in which the telecom companies are floundering and take a policy decision to release them from irrational payment obligations. Failure to forgo a claim on the telcos’ non-telecom revenues would, in turn, force the government to recoup over ₹2.4 lakh crore from assorted public sector enterprises such as Gail and Powergrid, who have incidental telecom licences and could well go belly up, if forced to pay this claim on their resources. There are some private sector players as well, who have been sucked into the revenue share quagmire because of their telecom licences. If the government chooses to exempt them from such payment, the telcos could claim injury under fundamental rights to equality and non-discrimination and get reprieve.
