Given that India is heavily and increasingly dependent on petroleum imports, bidding under the inaugural open acreage licensing policy for oil exploration and production is notable. Reports say 110 bids have been received for 55 blocks, which would increase the area under E&P for oil and gas assets by over 50%. This is indeed welcome resource allocation given that E&P activity is capital-intensive and risky, and our domestic crude output has been falling for six years in a row even as India has now become the third largest oil importer.
