In a TikTok video, while telling us how to lengthen our lashes, she makes a sudden swerve from the usual vloggerpatter: “then you’re going to put the (eyelash curler) down and search your phone for what’s happening in China,” describing the concentration camps for Uighur Muslims and the oppression they face. TikTok, which is owned by Beijing based tech company Byte-Dance, first removed the video, and then apologised for the error and restored her account.
Adults often wring their hands at social media and its corrosive effects on young people. When it comes to teen girls, we concern-troll them about their self-esteem or frivolousness. This has something to do with our own biases and low expectations about young women and “serious” concerns.
