On Monday, during polling, a mob roughed up and kicked a poll candidate into a roadside ditch. That the victim was BJP state vice-president Jay Prakash Majumdar only exacerbates the claim being increasingly made that Bengal is caught in a spiral of anarchy. Majumdar claims that he was attacked by TMC goons. The ruling party claims that the attackers were angry villagers from Nadia district, where Majumdar was visiting polling booths, acting ‘spontaneously’ against the politician for ‘vitiating’ the poll atmosphere. The violence itself was not condemned. This response was baneful.
