The editorial
Source: The Economic Times · 19 Jun 2020With US President Donald Trump threatening to strip internet companies of the shield offered by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, the limits to freedom of speech on the web and accountability of internet firms, social media platforms in particular, have come to the fore again. Section 230 offers the likes of Google and Facebook two kinds of protection: one, it gives them a shield, in that they would not be treated as publishers of user-generated content on their site; and, two, it gives them a sword, the right to moderate user-generated content on their site to suit their policy on decency and hate speech, without being sued for violation of freedom of expression. The right balance would be to give social media the same protection and accountability as have been accorded to traditional media.
