Source: The Economic Times · 19 Jun 2020From today till June 30, Chennai and adjoining districts will be placed under ‘maximised restricted lockdown’ — that is, these areas will return to the total lockdown the nation went through over March 25-April 14. The Bhiwandi-Nizampura municipal corporation has declared a 15-day lockdown. There are rumours of a fresh lockdown being contemplated for Gurugram, adjacent to Delhi. This is bad news, as a result of bad news. Worse, it is bad policy. The lockdown bought time to prepare the healthcare system to take on larger numbers of patients, if required. It was not, and is not, a panacea for the pandemic. India must stay open and fight the disease with social distancing, hygienic practices and organised care for those who do fall prey to the virus.
