A map is never a neutral photograph of the earth. Every attempt to render a sphere on a flat sheet must distort something, and the choice of what to distort is a choice about what matters. The renewed campaign, backed at the United Nations and led by African voices, to retire the sixteenth-century Mercator projection from official and educational use has therefore been misread by some as vanity. It is, in fact, a serious argument about the visual grammar through which the world is taught to see itself.
