The editorial
Source: The Economic Times · 17 Jul 2020banking, comprising non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and housing finance companies (HFCs). The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has invited public comments on its proposed regulatory changes for HFCs. RBI should, straightaway, open a repo window for NBFCs and HFCs, akin to banks, so as to boost liquidity.
NBFCs and HFCs provide credit for the unbanked and underserved segments and, thus, complement the banking sector. Credit from banks and shadow banks stood in the ratio of 70:30 for FY19, as per RBI data. NBFCs account for 30% of auto loans, HFCs provide 42% of housing loans. Yet, for years, the requisite regulatory scrutiny of NBFCs and HFCs has been sketchy; the law was changed only last year to bring HFCs under RBI’s direct supervision. Capital requirements of HFCs are being raised for prudential purposes.
