Source: The Economic Times · 17 Jul 2020One million Covid-19 infections, about 350,000 active cases and over 25,000 deaths. The absolute numbers are dark, especially as India is now positioned behind just two countries, the US and Brazil, in the global ranking of Covid damage. But look closer and the picture is far less sombre.
There are two kinds of reasons for this. One is that India’s numbers are one of the least worrisome in the world, when seen in terms of per million of the population. Another is that the treatment protocols are improving, new drugs are being deployed, essentially through repurposing of established drugs used for other ailments, and the prospects of effective vaccines early at hand are brightening. Panic is the last thing India needs, in the face of the millionth registered case of coronavirus infection.
