Bad economics is contagious as politicians misrepresent failed policies as silver bullets.

Bad ideas are contagious. Goods, services and people may face barriers to movement in India but bad ideas don’t. No sooner did Madhya Pradesh’s new Congress chief minister Kamal Nath announce a farm loan waiver, Gujarat’s government said it would waive unpaid electricity bills in rural areas. Experience shows that waivers and write-offs are never one-time events. Now, a decade after the Congress-led UPA implemented a national farm loan waiver supposedly meant to solve India’s agrarian distress, party president Rahul Gandhi is ratcheting up pressure on NDA to repeat that mistake. Regardless of how political parties position themselves, what we have is a poverty of ideas on economic issues.
