1. Mother language should be made mandatory for school education: Vice President

Vice President said that the language is the soul of a society, the binding thread of human existence and it has been a vehicle, from time immemorial, for communication of thoughts, feelings and ideas. He further said that our societies have been built on the recognition of the fact that language is the lifeblood of a culture and building block of civilization. The richness of a culture is evident from the vocabulary, the syntax, he added.

The Vice President said that not enough attention is being paid to ensure that children master at least one language well during their schooling stage and this weakens the foundations for further learning. We need good researches that would aim to cement and enhance our tradition of excellent critical, historical, theoretical and creative scholarship across a full range of periods, genres and linguistic research areas, he added.

2. The first ever All India Institute of Ayurveda to be dedicated to the Nation by the Prime Minister on Ayurveda Day at New Delhi

“National Dhanwantari Ayurveda Award” comprising of Citation, Trophy (Dhanwantari Statue) and Cash reward of Rupees five lakh will be conferred on this day to 3 to 4 eminent Vaidyas and Ayurveda experts. On this occasion, the Prime Minister will also give away the Yoga Award to the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute, Pune, which was announced earlier this year on the occasion of International Day of Yoga.

3. Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY) has been started to provide a permanent solution from drought

Government is investing Rs 50,000 crore for a period of five years to develop complete irrigation supply chain, water resources, distribution network and farm-level application solutions to achieve the target of providing water for every farm .

He said we have a total of 200.8 million hectares of agricultural land in the country out of which only 95.8 million hectares is irrigated, which is only 48 percent of the total. Therefore, it is a challenge to provide water to 52% of non-irrigated land and make it suitable for adoption of advanced farming. It’s possible only through proper water management.

PMKSY Scheme is being implemented in the mission mode with the help of Command Area Development to complete 99 major and medium irrigation projects covering 76.03 lakh hectares in a phased manner till December 2019.

4. Bureau of Indian standards (BIS) Act 2016 brought into force with effect from 12th October, 2017

The Act has enabling provisions for the Government to bring under compulsory certification regime any goods or article of any scheduled industry, process, system or service which it considers necessary in the public interest or for the protection of human, animal or plant health, safety of the environment, or prevention of unfair trade practices, or national security. Enabling provisions have also been made for making hallmarking of the precious metal articles mandatory.

The largest Biology Lesson in the world, Verified by Guiness World Records at the IISF 2017, Chennai

Day two of the India International Science Festival (IISF) in Anna University campus at Chennai saw the making of a new Guinness World Record for the Largest Biology Lesson. One thousand forty nine (1049) students participated in the record breaking session. While inaugurating the Largest Biology Lesson, Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Science, Dr. Harsh Vardhan said that it is the vision of the Prime Minister, Shri. Narendra Modi, to encourage and promote science and the Govt. of India has launched many Flagship Programmes in this regard. He also invoked C V Raman and how he has won the Nobel Prize, which is first by any Indian to do so.

6. RAPID PROGRESS IN MICRO IRRIGATION SAYS RADHA MOHAN INDIA WATER WEEK – 2017 CONCLUDES

The five day India water week (IWW) - 2017 concluded in New Delhi today with a call for efficient management of available water resources in the country by Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shri Radha Mohan Singh. Addressing the valedictory session of IWW the Minister said that the present NDA government has achieved unparallel success in the field of micro irrigation. Shri Singh said eight lakh hact. of land was brought under micro irrigation during 2016-17. The target for 2017-18 is 12 lakh hact. Referring to Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayi Yojana the Minister said out of the 99 projects 23 are on the verge of completion. He informed that another 32 PMKSY project will be completed by March next year and the remaining by 2019. The Union Agriculture Minister also underlined the need for removing encroachments from Water bodies all over the country to preserve the water resources for posterity.
