Source: The Times of India · 9 Apr 2019Nasheed’s return and political victory strengthens democracy in the Maldives.
In a remarkable political turnaround for the Maldives, former President Mohamed Nasheed’s Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) registered a landslide victory in recent parliamentary polls in the Indian Ocean nation. This comes after MDP won the presidential polls in September last year, ending the authoritarian regime of then president Abdulla Yameen. Both victories not only solidify Nasheed’s comeback from exile – he was forced to leave the Maldives in 2016 after a controversial terrorism conviction – but also put Maldivian democracy back on track. It will be recalled that Nasheed had become the Maldives’s first democratically elected president in 2008. However, he was forced to step down under intimidating circumstances in 2012.
