The BJP manifesto centres on Narendra Modi, his achievements as Prime Minister since 2014, his vision for India’s all-round development and emergence as a global power, and promise of efficient, corruption-free growth. BJP’s old chestnuts of Ram Mandir, abrogation of Article 370, a uniform civil code and return of Kashmiri Pandits to Kashmir figure, once again. If the past is any indication, expect these to figure in the 2024 manifesto as well. However, a new addition is an explicit commitment to scrap Article 35A of the Constitution, which empowers the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) legislature to specify who are the state’s permanent residents and entitled to special rights over jobs, residence and property. It also provides the route for extending India’s constitutional provisions to J&K, which has its own constitution. This confirms the party’s shift to a very hard line on Kashmir.
