Air India’s internal checks and balances merit a thorough overhaul after revelations that the public carrier promoted a pilot to a responsible supervisory position during the period that his flying licence was under suspension for failing an alcohol test. The repercussions of such cavalier management of personnel by the airline have now come home to roost with the same pilot again failing breathalyzer tests. As Air India’s director (operations), Captain Arvind Kathpalia was in charge of overall flight operations management and ensuring safe and efficient operations.
