Despite this it feels threatened by Chinese social media app TikTok, which follows aggressive data practices and has emerged as a flashpoint between the two countries. Subsequent US attempts to restructure TikTok hold significant regulatory and policy lessons for India.
TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance, was reportedly downloaded over 175 million times in the US when President Donald Trump used his executive powers, flowing from the country’s national security framework, to order a shutdown of TikTok. Subsequently, ByteDance found a way out. A US subsidiary, TikTok Global, was to be created with stakes for Oracle Corp and Walmart. The source code for TikTok was to be under American oversight. However, China now says it will restrict the source code’s export.
