The planet’s natural systems are rapidly degrading because of human activities such that a million species of plants and animals are on the verge of extinction. Human actions are ravaging the earth’s ecosystems and undermining the systems that sustain life. A new report from UN’s Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, the most comprehensive assessment of the global ecosystems to date, is an indictment of how humans have treated the Earth. While the situation is grim, all is not lost. It is possible to slow down and even halt the degradation but that will require concerted action by governments, the private sector and civil society. The window of opportunity is small and calls for action now at local, national, regional and global levels.
