On Twitter, she has defended a woman who was fired for transphobia, she has seemed to scoff at ‘men in dresses’. Recently she opened a new front in the battle, mocking an article that spoke of “people who menstruate”. In her view, to deny that ‘sex’ makes someone female is to deny women’s lived realities.
Of course, the only lived realities that Rowling is excluding are of trans people, all those who don’t belong in their given anatomies or conform to the binary. Many of these fans, too, had grown up loving and co-creating her fictional Potterverse, which enlarged their imaginations, reinforced empathy and diversity, warned against harsh purities.
