Here’s a list of things the party must work on if it wants to win elections.

The Congress party must have thought it had Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP on the backfoot going into Karnataka state elections. The results indicate even if this was the case at the start of campaigning it was not the case by the end. Why BJP came out as the largest party in the state is not altogether clear. But whatever happens in the next few days and weeks in terms of government formation, what is clear is that Congress needs a reset before national elections in 2019 – perhaps even earlier if Modi chooses to opt for an early general election to capitalise on the Karnataka result.
