Many liquor shops face closure on account of unruly crowding that dispensed with social distancing, after these were allowed to be reopened after six weeks of lockdown. Closing liquor shops has been a costly mistake. It has deprived state governments of a vital source of revenue. It has also led to a black market in liquor, in which some unscrupulous elements charge huge premiums on the normal price of the liquor they sell. And the repressed demand has spilt out as uncontrollable crowds milling at shop entrances, when liquor shops were finally allowed to open, in several states. The solution is to let shops stay open for longer hours, not to shut them down.
