Two loose national fronts are taking shape. Only the elections remain to be fought.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi may argue that a “mahamilavat” is ranged against him but BJP has pursued its own mahagathbandhan with equal vigour. It has beaten Congress-led UPA in settling seat-sharing arrangements in Bihar, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Congress has already announced its partnerships in Jharkhand and TN while talks are on elsewhere. 2019 is increasingly looking like a battle between two mahagathbandhans – in contrast to 2014 when the Modi wave eclipsed traditional alliances, caste equations and the heft of regional parties.
