The seat sharing deal between AIADMK and BJP in Tamil Nadu has brought a large regional party into the NDA fold amid opinion polls projecting a hung Parliament. AIADMK’s surrender of 15 seats in TN-Puducherry with no evidence of a local BJP surge is a reflection of its diminishing clout in the post-Jayalalithaa scenario. This is the drawback of one-man or one-woman parties. Moreover, despite J Jayalalithaa’s warm ties with Prime Minister Narendra Modi – which secured for M Thambidurai the Lok Sabha deputy Speaker’s post – her AIADMK saw no need for a place in NDA or berths in the Union Cabinet and toed a neutral line.
