Source: The Economic Times · 5 Feb 2020One key tenet of this government seems to be that Indian industry can grow only behind a wall, raised ever higher year after year, of protection. This is perverse and would harm the economy in the medium term. A key and useful finding of this year’s Economic Survey, elicited using sophisticated econometric analysis, is that India’s free trade agreements, badmouthed in official and industry circles, have, contrary to the agreed common sense, raised India’s exports faster than imports. This means that India can compete with the rest of the world even without the crutches of tariff protection. The government needs to build on this, instead of taking the country back to the pre-reform days of import substitution.
