Reliable and comprehensive statistics are a public good. They are the bedrock of informed policy making, besides being a key facilitator for investment decisions of private firms. This public good has been in short supply for a while. There is reason to believe that India’s statistical system has struggled to keep pace with underlying changes in the economic structure over the last decade. In addition, there has been the creeping politicisation of data. Release of essential economic data has been postponed or even discarded prior to release. This needs to change.
