Source: The Economic times · 17 Jun 2019It’s all about skilled, courageous politics India as a $5 trillion economy by 2024 — that is the vision that Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented before the nation at the NITI Aayog. To achieve this would be hard, he said, but not impossible. He is right. The Indian economy is estimated to have been $2.74 trillion at market exchange rates in 2018-19, leaving aside all controversies over GDP estimates. From there to reach $5 trillion in five years, the economy needs to grow at a compound rate of 12.8% every year. Growth in dollar terms would be a combination of growth in rupee terms and change in the exchange rate. If India achieves real growth in excess of 8%, maintains macroeconomic stability and registers steady rise in productivity that would allow the rupee to gain against the dollar, the target is achievable.
