Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi says the GST Council will reject the requests by telcos for refund of input tax credit of ₹36,000 crore. This is ludicrous. It defeats the purpose of GST that allows producers to claim credit for the taxes paid on inputs across the value chain and makes product efficient. Tax revenues drop to the extent credit is used true, but denying telcos refund of input tax credit ostensibly due to worries over slowing revenues is plain unfair. It will exacerbate the financial stress of Indian telecom, and, in turn, of the banking system that has a huge exposure to the telcos.
