The editorial
Source: The Economic Times · 11 Jul 2018Spouses of Indian tech workers can breathe a sigh of relief. The Donald Trump administration hasn’t initiated the process to terminate their work visas as it had threatened. The June deadline for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to issue a notification to end work authorisation for H-4 visa-holders passed without action. DHS missed a similar deadline in February in a lawsuit against H-4 work permits filed by an anti-immigrant group. DHS missing two deadlines clearly indicates a rethink by the White House. Of course, it can’t say it out loud.
The H-4 visas for H-1Bs’ spouses didn’t use to include work authorisation until the Barack Obama government changed the rules in 2015. “But it is not a special right that people have. No other country gives spouses automatic work visas. India doesn’t,” an administration official told me pointedly. And the official is right.
