Tripura to vote on february 16 meghalaya and nagaland on february

NEW DELHI: Tripura will go to polls on February 16 while Meghalaya and Nagaland will vote on 27, the Election Commission announced on Wednesday.

The counting of votes for all three north-eastern states will be held on March 2, the poll panel said.

The model code of conduct has also come into force in the three states.

Assembly by polls in Arunachal Pradesh,

Jharkhand, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Lakshadweep and Tamil Nadu will take place on February 27 and the results will be declared on March 2, the commission said.

"The Election Commission is committed to violence-free election, there's no place for violence in a democracy," chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar said during a media briefing.

He said there are a total of 62.8 lakh voters in the three poll-bound north-eastern states. "2.28 lakh voters have been added this year of which 97,000 are 80 plus, 32,700 are those with disabilities and 2,600 are aged 100-plus," the poll panel chief said.

While the term of the Nagaland assembly ends on March 12, the terms of Meghalaya and Tripura assemblies end on March 15 and March 22 respectively.

The three state assemblies have a strength of 60 members each.

Total seats: 60

Majority mark: 31 seats

Manik Sarkar of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) served as chief minister of Tripura from 1998 to 2018; his reign was the longest in the states history.

The incumbent is Manik Saha ,after Biplab Kumar Deb resigned from the post.

Meghalaya assembly election 2023

Total seats: 60

Majority mark: 31 seats

Current tenure: 16 March, 2018 - 15 March, 2023

Current CM: Conrad Sangma (National People's Party)

Meghalaya chief ministers and their tenure Since Williamson A. Sangma entered office in 1970 till Conrad Sangma, who is presently serving as chief minister and is a member of the National People's Party, Meghalaya has had 12 chief ministers.6 of these chief ministers are members of the Indian National Congress.

The longest-serving chief minister, Mukul Sangma, in office for eight years. Meghalaya has only been governed by the president for two brief years. The All Party Hill Leaders Conference has been the main governing party.

Nagaland assembly election 2023

Total seats: 60

Majority mark: 31 seats

Current tenure: 13 March, 2018 - 12 March, 2023

Current CM: Neiphiu Rio (Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party)

Nagaland chief ministers and their tenure Since 1963, Nagaland has seen 24 people as chief minister starting from P.Shilu Ao who took oath in 1963 to currently serving Neiphiu Rio who took oath in 2018 and is from Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party.

Out of this, 4 chief ministers are from Indian National Congress party.

The 2023 is a crucial year as assembly polls in 9 states are due this year. Apart from the four northeast states - Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana will be going ahead for elections for the year 2023 and the winner's tenurity shall continue for the next 5 years.

Notably, this will also set the base platform for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
