We join the rest of the nation in wishing Amitabh Bachchan and his family a speedy recovery from Covid-19. But now that some of the twinkliest stars of Bollywood have taken ill, it is difficult not to reflect on the good that might come out of it: an end to the stigma that attaches to the disease in this country, where panicking neighbours slam the gates on doctors when they return home from a day’s toil at the hospital and avoid those who have fallen ill or recovered like the plague. Given the outpouring of concern for the Bachchan family, especially as news came in that daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai and her daughter too have tested positive and are under home quarantine, we hope public misconception about the disease would be dispelled.
