The editorial
Source: The Economic Times · 26 Feb 2020Several Congressmen have recently started calling for organisational elections to choose a leader, as the party has only an acting president. This is naïve. Party politics in India is carried out not through formal elections but by collegial understanding and accommodation among the senior-most leaders. Forget parties that are essentially family fiefs. The Communists come closest to holding organisational elections, but rarely are these more than shows of inner-party democracy. BJP does not hold elections. The party president is chosen and the party acquiesces. Congress also goes through the motions, but it is a collegium of senior leaders that wields real power. The Gandhis, Mohandas and Indira, were exceptions.
