While Yogi Adityanath’s return as Uttar Pradesh chief minister was a certainty, suspense over the fates of three other incumbent BJP CMs had continued for 10 days. Ultimately, their success in trumping anti-incumbency was rewarded. The troika of PS Dhami, N Biren Singh and Pramod Sawant aren’t heavyweights and BJP’s central leadership had to contend with other claimants for their jobs. But the present BJP, with its powerful high command led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is also a key factor in helping BJP win state elections, has ensured that state leaders fall in line.
