While it remains to be seen if the truce holds, the pause in fighting is certainly welcome. Thousands of rockets launched by Hamas from the Gaza Strip and Israel’s intense shelling in response had created a serious humanitarian crisis. According to health officials in Gaza, 232 Palestinians, including 65 children and 39 women, have been killed in the violence, while Israel put the death toll on its side at 12.
