India did well to politely turn down US President Donald Trump’s public offer of mediation with China. New Delhi has no need or appetite to internationalise a situation that can be resolved bilaterally. That said, India does need to have all its international friends and partners in its corner as China continues with its aggression on the border. India’s growing confidence to exert its rights and those of its citizens, its willingness to hold China to account, and to compete with China on the global stage are the drivers of the recent uptick in Beijing’s aggression. New Delhi must continue to stay the course, respond to Beijing firmly and decisively, while ensuring that regional stability is not jeopardised.
