Chinese attempts to paint India as aggressor is par for the course for a regime that’s even better at spreading misinformation than it is at incentivising manufacturing. But whatever the true nature of the clash, three things are clear.
First, this was no ordinary border skirmish. Indian officers and soldiers have died — casualty figures are perhaps more than what will be officially admitted — and as this newspaper is reporting, some army personnel were taken prisoners by Chinese army units. Second, the extremely serious nature of the incident requires a serious Indian response. Third, and most important, that response must be informed by staying both calm and firm.
