India’s drug regulator, DGCI, has cleared emergency use of Sputnik V vaccine. It’s been developed by Russia’s Gamaleya National Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology, which was set up in 1891.

Sputnik will be the third vaccine to be used in India, after Covishield and Covaxin. The approval will help India quicken the pace of vaccination drive to limit the damage of the second wave of coronavirus which is sweeping the country. All aspects considered, vaccination represents the most effective way for India to limit the damage of the pandemic. In the absence of adequate vaccination coverage, states have been forced to resort to lockdowns to cope with transmission surges. Unfortunately, each lockdown imposes a heavy economic cost and delays a full economic recovery.
