The heart is in the right place. The brain trust needs to be there too. Conferring six institutions with the ‘institute of eminence’ status will give them unprecedented administrative and academic autonomy. GoI gets top marks for linking autonomy with incubating excellence. But it’s ironic that a bulk of India’s higher education network — comprising 850 universities, 37,204 colleges and 11,443 stand-alone institutions — seem to be going the other way: more political interference, shrinking autonomy. What’s sauce for the selected ‘eminent’ geese should be sauce for the not-so-éminences grises.
