Source: The Economic Times · 12 May 2019The Supreme Court has reportedly asked the government to look at taking over beleaguered realtor Unitech and completing its pending housing projects. This is a bad idea. Any such takeover of private companies whose promoters have run their business into the ground and defaulted on loans would set a wrong precedent. It will undermine the credit culture: promoters could wilfully default on repayments in the hope that the government would bail their companies out. Instead, lenders must use the bankruptcy code to resolve corporate distress and clean up bad loans on the books of banks. Protecting homebuyers could be a condition for resolution.
