Trade deficit data suggests falling competitiveness of Indian manufacturing sector.

Few Indians may have heard of Yiwu, a city in China’s Zhejiang province. Nevertheless, the city has a strong Indian connection. Yiwu is a manufacturing hub which makes figurines of Ganesha sold in India’s markets. This phenomenon encapsulates a challenge confronting Indian manufacturing: it’s struggling to even make for India, let alone make in India for other markets. There is a strong possibility that the Yiwu phenomenon is widespread. India’s merchandise trade deficit over the last four years, after excluding oil and gold transactions, has widened. It hasn’t yet dented current account deficit because of a benign phase in oil and commodity prices. But the tide may be turning.
