Beyond the pleasantries, and Modi’s acceptance of Xi’s invite for a similar summit in a year or so, the one concrete step forward appears to be the formation of a high-level mechanism, to be chaired by finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Chinese Vice Premier Hu Chunhua, to discuss trade issues and find ways to address India’s gaping trade deficit with China.
