Bharatpur sanctuary falls prey to stray cattle – after farmlands, roads, schools, hospitals.

It’s a birds’ and birders’ paradise. This is why the Keoladeo national park in Bharatpur, Rajasthan is also a Unesco world heritage site. Yesteryear maharajahs built moats, planted trees and shrubs, and flooded the low-lying area. Between that and regular monsoon rains the sanctuary has become famed for both residential and migratory winged creatures like herons, storks, flamingos, cormorants, ducks, lapwings, curlews, egrets, cranes. Each season here hosts a gladsome diversity of birds. But all that is threatened today.
