One recommendation, allowing industrial houses to promote banks, triggered wide debate. Last week, RBI announced that it accepted 21 of the 33 recommendations of the internal committee. The one related to industrial houses was not accepted; it remains under examination. It should be rejected because in the Indian context, the risks outweigh potential benefits. In addition, traditional banking faces existential challenges, which is where regulatory attention will increase.
