The Supreme Court has sought Centre’s response on a PIL challenging these provisions which require marriage officers to put up public notices for 30 days to solicit objections before the marriage is registered. The notice reveals personal details of the couple like their current and permanent addresses, which often become an avenue for harassment and personal injury. The petitioners flagged the incidents of honour killings and parental and societal opposition to inter-caste and inter-religious marriages.
