In a welcome move, the Indian Railways reportedly plan to invite the private sector to operate passenger trains, in low-congestion and tourist routes to begin with. The Railways do need to gainfully leverage the skills and expertise of, say, the hospitality industry, to access capital, productive management practices, up-to-date technology, and generally modernise their operations. The railway unions must also be open to the idea and taken on-board, as private participation can open up a whole new vista of opportunity in the travel and tourism industry as the Indian economy gains economic speed.
