Source: The Economic Times · 11 Dec 2019President Emmanuel Macron has not let the gilets jaunes (yellow vests) protest that has dragged on for a year kill his appetite for reforming France. His next target is to reform France’s complex pension system, which has 42 separate schemes, different benefits, different retirement thresholds and different rules. At the moment, the goal is only to simplify and unify the pensions on a points-based system linked to how many years of service people have put in. At the moment, there is no move to curb the expenditure on pensions, which is 14% of GDP, almost double the OECD average. This has enraged the unions and France is right now shut for business, with trains, airports and roads blocked and teachers, lawyers and other service providers on strike.
