The editorial
Source: The Times of India · 28 Jun 2018Parties present a dizzying hall of mirrors even as they go hammer and tongs at each other.
Political temperatures are, of course, rising as general elections approach. But even as parties go hammer and tongs at each other, it is interesting how much they borrow from each other’s armoury. Congress, for example, has borrowed the ‘Aurangzeb’ metaphor from BJP’s favoured demonology. It has sharpened its attack on intolerance from NDA quarters – while signalling its own distance from Muslim ‘appeasement’ – by likening Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Aurangzeb. On the other hand, perhaps in response to Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s frequent “murder of democracy” barbs directed at the government, BJP has brought up sharply memories of the Emergency imposed 43 years ago.
