Yesterday, with the click of a mouse, Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the first tranche of government’s ambitious income transfer scheme for small and marginal farmers. The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi was announced in this month’s interim budget and offers Rs 6,000 as annual cash transfer to farmers with land holdings less than two hectares. The farmers’ rally in Gorakhpur where the PM launched the initiative saw the first of three instalments – each of Rs 2,000 – being deposited directly into farmers’ bank accounts.
