1. First day of conference of Governors concludes with presentations and discussion on ‘Higher Education in States’ and ‘Skill Development and Entrepreneurship - Making Youth Employable’The agenda of the Conference has been shaped by the over-arching national mission to achieve ‘New India-2022’. India will complete 75 years of Independence in 2022. The Union Government has developed a vision for ‘New India-2022’ that will require initiatives in education and skill building, enhancing educational, health and sanitation capacities of citizens, and upgrading infrastructure. Also envisaged is better access to and quality of public services. Addressing the participants, the President emphasised the need to trust citizens. He gave the examples of self-attestation of documents by individuals and the easier mechanism for obtaining a passport that is in place now, urging States to take forward this philosophy of trusting the citizen. 2. “Make in India: Sweden 2017”
Make in India: Sweden 2017, organized by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion in Stockholm, from October 12-13aims to enhance Indo-Swedish cooperation and explore new areas of partnership.
SAAB expressed interest in introducing full scope for development of industrial systems, from design and engineering to production. The importance of technological cooperation was highlighted with focus on creation of high-technology zones close to forward going universities. SAAB representatives appreciated the successful GST introduction in India that has resulted in growth of domestic trade. Importance of fostering an EU-India Free Trade Agreement was discussed, given its potential to open borders and enable products to compete. It was agreed that higher economic integration and interdependencies will help resolve global political issues.
The main highlight of the day was the second edition of the India-Sweden Business Leaders’ Roundtable (ISBLRT) which focused on cooperation between the two countries, progress update of four joint working groups (Digitization, Smart Cities, Defence and Security and Skill Development) and the work plan for the year to come.
3. Power Minister chairs Curtain Raiser Ceremony for Global Renewable Energy Investors Meet and Expo (RE-Invest 2017) and Founding Ceremony of ISA
India is strategically placed, with both the demand and supply of renewable energy co-existing in the country. Consequently, it provides ample opportunities for trade and investment. RE-INVEST2017 will provide ample opportunities to the Global renewable energy industry to forge new partnerships and contribute to India’s renewable energy journey. Private sector has always played a key role in India’s efforts to tap renewable energy. India permits un-interrupted foreign investment for renewable energy development and deployment.
4. Index of Industrial Production (Base 2011-12=100)
The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 2011-12 for the month of August 2017 have been released by the Central Statistics Office of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. IIP is compiled using data received from 14 source agencies viz. (i) Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP); (ii) Indian Bureau of Mines; (iii) Central Electricity Authority; (iv) Joint Plant Committee, Ministry of Steel; (v) Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas; (vi) Office of Textile Commissioner; (vii) Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals; (viii) Directorate of Sugar & Vegetable Oils; (ix) Department of Fertilizers; (x) Tea Board; (xi) Office of Jute Commissioner; (xii) Office of Coal Controller; (xiii) Railway Board; and (xiv) Coffee Board.
The General Index for the month of August 2017 stands at 121.5, which is 4.3 percent higher as compared to the level in the month of August 2016. The cumulative growth for the period April-August 2017 over the corresponding period of the previous year stands at 2.2 percent.
5. Supplementary Nutrition Program under ICDS
Supplementary nutrition services under the part of the ICDS programme is a legal entitlement under the National Food Security Act, 2013. As per the Section 5(1) (a) of the Act, a child in the age group of 6 months to 6 years is entitled to age appropriate meal, free of charge, through the local anganwadi so as to get the nutrition specified in Schedule-II of NFSA 2013.
