Today’s topic: The Hindu editorial, “Warning on warming: On the UNEP report, Limiting Overshoot”.

The most sobering shift in climate science over the past few years has been the quiet retirement of a comforting assumption. For a long time the international conversation treated the agreed temperature thresholds as walls that would either hold or fail. The emerging consensus, reflected in the latest United Nations environment assessment, is that the world will very likely cross those thresholds for a period and then, if emissions fall steeply enough, come back down. This is the phenomenon of overshoot, and it changes what climate policy must actually do.
