Source: The Economic Times · 3 May 2020More than 2,500 years ago, the Budhha had set out on a spiritual voyage to find out why one suffers. He discovered that there are three basic facts of all existence: anicca, impermanence, or change; dukkha, suffering, and anatta, non-self. The first and the third apply to inanimate existence as well, while the second (suffering) is an experience of the animate, like us.
Existence, he said, can be understood only if these three fundamental facts are well comprehended. Anicca, which is at the core of the Buddha’s teachings, means that reality is never static; it is always dynamic. Anything, animate or inanimate, organic or inorganic, is not permanent. All is fleeting, yet, we are unmindful of this fact and fail to act with dispassionate discernment. The truth of impermanence helps us to develop two vital mental qualities, equanimity and empathy.
