Masks are the signature accessory this season. Leaving aside some irresponsible refuseniks, most people make an attempt to shield each other from harm. Civic space has changed utterly. A whole subterranean realm of reading each other’s expressions, being polite to strangers, acknowledging their presence, is no longer possible. When faces are half hidden, our friendly humanity doesn’t show through. A covered mouth hides a range of expressions. Now, we are just floating pairs of eyes.
