The chief culprit is chemical fertilisers, though the transport boom, sewage and organic waste, too, boost emissions of reactive nitrogen. The level of nitrogen in the ecosystem has begun to degrade life. Nitrogen pollution has escaped the attention that carbon dioxide has got. That changed last week at the fourth United Nations Environment Assembly, where India piloted a resolution adopted by all countries to work towards a more sustainable management of nitrogen.
